PREFACE several stone dwellings and shops were built, too. The number of stone buildings, however, remained low: in the mid 19th century, three quarters of the buildings were made of wood, adobe or cob, while the overwhelming majority of the roofs was made of shingle or straw. At the same time, the main streets were paved with stones. The second half of the 19th century, and the first half of the 20th century are recorded as being the period of the most spectacular development of Satu Mare. At the same time, with the demolition of the old Town Hall and the construction of the Dacia Hotel (Pannónia Hotel) in 1900, other multi-level buildings were constructed in the centre of the town. The most important buildings completed in this era were the headquarters of the administrative authorities (The Palace of Justice, the centre of the railroads, the barracks), residence of the banks, and cultural institutions (the Northern Theatre, or the Mihai Eminescu High School). Similarly, a great number of dwellings were built in this period, which, beyond the particularities of the fagade, had a uniform character specific to the middle class life of Satu Mare. Buildings of this type of construction are kept untouched in the central area of the city. During the interwar period, the territory of the city expanded onto the left side of the Someş river, where the clerks' district was situated. With the establishment of the county centre in Satu Mare, a new headquarters of administration was built at the corner ofTraian Boulevard and Vasile Lucaciu Boulevard (today the County Museum). Two more cathedrals, the Orthodox and the Greek-Catholic were built in this period. During World War II, the town was seriously affected by the allied bombardment. A part of the ruined buildings was not restored, but they were replaced with modern buildings after the war.
