Introducere

PREFACE Someş river that underwent the most spectacular development. The south industrial platform was formed and expanded as well as districts of block of flats were successively built, starting with 1960. In order to link these areas with the old city, the second bridge (Golescu bridge) was built. In parallel with the creation of the districts of excessive density, zones of gardens and orchards were formed with small weekend houses near the Someş river. In the early 1980s the modernization and systematization of the historical part of the city was proposed, by demolishing the majority of the buildings, and transforming the traditional street network. Through this project 25 Octombrie Square (the New Centre) was built. This historical sketch of the city explains the contents of the postcards: they present mainly buildings constructed at the turn of the 19th century, as older buildings are only exceptionally preserved until today. The 77 picture postcards making up the catalogue were grouped according to the objects they show. A short historical and general presentation is given at each section. The order of the presentation offers a virtual sightseeing tour of Satu Mare, the postcards being arranged more or less, according to the geographic position of what they represent. The inventory number of the postcards are indicated at the captions of the illustrations. Finally, there is a bibliography, used by the authors at the explanatory texts. 21
