Damir Jelic: “Living in the neighbourhood” - Economic Relations between Capitalist Austria and Socialist Croatia in Historical Perspective

Damir Jelic However, Austria’s human and financial capital was able to enter profoundly the Croatian banking and insurance market. And these business branches are probably the most profitable ones in Croatia today. Taking into account some long-term trends of economic relations between Austria and Croatia, we have to conclude that their character will continue to be that of a good neighbourhood relationship - just as it was during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Kingdom of SHS and socialist Yugoslavia. Austrians will continue to profit from a better human capital and financial organisation. At the same time, it will not have any deep impact on Croatia’s economic independence. We were, we are and we will continue to be good neighbours. References Croatia and Slavonia. Handbook No. 9 of the historical section of the Foreign Office. London, March 1919.
