Hans Hofmann: I am representing the stock archives of the European Commission and would like to ask Kenneth Hall. You gave a very lively and, I think, correct description of the Symposium of Maastricht, which filled a gap, if I understood correctly. You mentioned, that junior and mid-career archivists have been mainly concerned, and you said there was a forum on European level in a particular atmosphere. I would like to ask you: Do you intend to put a particular emphasis on „middle management“ of archivists, that means junior or mid-career archivists. On top of everything else you said about Maastricht, I am sure that you would improve on it in your UK arrangement next year.

Kenneth Hall: I do think, that it filled a gap, in that is more difficult to junior archivists particularly to participate at the international level. They are not specifically excluded, it is just more difficult for them to do so. What I am suggesting is that if you were to expand national archival association conferences from time to time, to be able to cater for these people, then you would be doing something that will help ICA, but I do feel that this ought to be done within the context of ICA and not in any way in competition without suggesting that it is part of ICA. The difficulty in any very large forum is simply to get participation particularly from junior members of the profession. They do feel inhibited. If you are able to have a small conference and small groups with dauntless speakers who know what they are talking about, then it is more likely that the junior and middle ranking archivists will feel able to participate. Perhaps I am just reflecting my own caution and nervousness when I was even more junior than I am now.

Jerzy Skowronek: Notre but principal c’est la discussion générale à propos de coopération internationale ou peut-être les problèmes de discussion aux sujets concrets de cette coopération. Car de temps en temps, j’imagine que c’est comme le problème de coopération entre l’Europe de l’Est et l’Europe d’Ouest dans le niveau économique, n’est-ce pas. Nous avons beaucoup de discussions mais il n’y a pas de concrets résultats. Les opinions que nous écoutons aujourd’hui me semble très intéressantes et je pense qu’il y a de l’optimisme vis-à-vis du temps, mais maintenant il faudra discuter à propos de concrétisation, les conditions de cette coopération et il faudra préciser des concrets programmes.

Pensant au TEMPUS ou ERASMUS, etc. il serait possible de discuter sur le programme concret régional ou européen, par exemple sur le sujet de prisonniers de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Il y en a de grandes sources qui sont divisées parmi de très différentes archives et je pense que c’est le grand problème à l’égard de grands anniversaires en 1995. Deuxièmement, en ce qui concerne les grands mouvements politiques contemporains du XIXe et XXe siècles, il en faudra préciser l’information internationale sur les sources d’archives de ces mouvements. Un autre exemple c’est la documentation de la politique sur le problème du nationalisme. Autour ces grands problèmes de l’époque contemporaine je voudrais concentrer les grandes initiatives internationales. Il faut discuter comme on prépare les informations en mettant en
