15 May/15 mai 1993 Closing Session/Séance de Clôture Charles Burns: Now almost one week I have been parading in what is the equivalent of national dress. I am already sure, at least by process of elimination, that you have concluded correctly that’s me, Charly Burns, your man in the Vatican. And that is how I would like you to think of me, just the same way as I think of all of you - as personal friends. One of the aspects of this conference I’d like to underline, the conviviality, the friendly atmospere that has been shown, and that probably is the most important thing of all. I’m happy to be invited to chair this final session, though I must admit when I received the program, my heart fell into my boots, because I had the impression that I had at least two hours at my disposal to do whatever I liked except abandon the chair. I would hate to repeat the case of Cardinal Nasali Rocca who himself fell asleep when preaching to a community of nuns, but fear not. Indeed, the secular arm has come to the aid of Holy Mother Church, in the person of Hermann Rumschöttel, our well-known and worthy colleague, director general of the Bavarian State Archives and head of the German Society of Archivists. Mr. Rumschöttel is well prepared to analyze and summarize the contents of the papers that have been delivered and discussed in four working sessions. Naturally I am relieved of this great burden and I am deeply grateful to Mr. Rumschöttel, though I hope he does not become a confirmed anticlerical in consequence. Conclusion Hermann Rumschöttel Neue Formen und Perspektiven der Archivzusammenarbeit in Europa Herr Vorsitzender, meine sehr verehrten Damen und Herren, liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen! Ihr Vertrauen, ich sei in der Lage, unsere mehrtägigen Verhandlungen kurz zusammenzufassen, ehrt mich sehr. Herzlichen Dank! Aber ich werde Sie enttäuschen. Bei den lebhaften Diskussionen dieser Konferenz sind soviele Aspekte angesprochen, soviele Ideen entwickelt, soviele Vorschläge unterbreitet worden, daß eine knappe Zusammenfassung nur subjektiv verkürzend grausam sein kann. Um diese unerfreulichen Folgen etwas zu mildern, habe ich dämm gebeten, meine Zusammenfassung vor der Schlußdiskussion geben zu dürfen. Sie haben dadurch die Möglichkeiten, Korrekturen anzubringen, andere Schwerpunkte zu setzen, Fehlendes zu ergänzen. Und ich denke, es entspricht auch mehr 443
