Duncan Chalmers: I wanted to pick up a point that Mr. Hofmann had made and our last speaker as well. It is not only a question of access that we should consider, it is also a question of selection. In other words, we should preserve records more than for just the historians to use. And although it is true the selection plays an important part in the use of archives, I think it is also important to, if archives are to be a reflection of the history, of the past, then they must also have a certain neutrality. And that brings me to the question that Mr. Palayret raised, which is the importance of consulting historians in selection. Now, I would not deny that but I would not want to see it dominate and it seems to me that the point that was made about mythological history, points at the dangers of relying purely on historians for advice.

Jean-Marie Palayret: I give my entire support to Mr. Chalmers proposal. The problem of tri, of triage, of appraisal and selection of documents was also raised during the conversation inside this group of experts in the EC. It appears again that the various countries have a lot of different rules in scheduling, for the selection and selective procedures; but I entirely support your proposal to introduce some historians or other scientists to have some expertise from a non-archivist point of vue.

Maarten van Boven: Ich wollte im Anschluß an meinen englischen Kollegen noch etwas sagen. In Holland fuhren wir gerade mit den Historikern intensive Diskussionen über den Wert der Archive, mit dem Ergebnis, überhaupt nichts zu vernichten. Ich meine aber, wir als Archivare sollen die alleinige Verantwortung in Fragen der Bewertung übernehmen.

Antoine Fleury: Une position très tranchée. J’admire le courage des archivistes néerlandais pour éliminer apparemment, parce qu’ils ne conservent pas tout, pour éliminer les documents qu’ils estiment inutiles pour l’histoire. C’est un grand problème que des documents aient été éliminés par le passé qu’on regrette actuellement de ne pas avoir dans nos archives parce qu’il y avait une autre perception de l’histoire, des pays sans intérêt, des individus, des couches sociales sans intérêt - tout ça nous avons connu. Ma foi, c’est un aspect du patrimoine culturel et de l’histoire de nos pays qui est ainsi détruit par des générations d’archivistes qui peut-être ne s’étaient pas entourés d’experts pour voir diverses perspectives à ce sujet.

Angelika Menne-Haritz: Ich sage sehr gerne noch etwas zu diesem Thema, das mich sehr interessiert. Wenn wir die Bewertung in andere Hände geben, dann geben wir tatsächlich unseren Beruf auf, und in diesem Sinne unterstütze ich die niederländische Position hundertprozentig. Gerade ihre Schilderung über die Vernichtung von Unterlagen, die man heute bedauert, ist ein Hinweis dafür, daß es eben eine archivisch-immanente Bewertungstheorie und Anleitung nicht gegeben hat. Diese Vernichtung ist eben vom historischen Standpunkt oder von Historikern gemacht worden und nicht vom archivischen Standpunkt aus.
