4. Session/Séance: Gonzalez, Data Bases and long distance Communcation

The objective being, then, to offer précité, updated information at both a national and international level on the documentary fonds in the Spanish Archives and on international archival bibliography, CIDA has used computing tools for its work right from the very start, with the added resource of remote access to its data bases11.

All CIDA’s possibilities of information dissemination have been based up till now on the use of the Ministerio de Cultura’s Central Computer, using the Information Storage and Retrieval SYSTEM, STAIRS, as a tool for data base management, under CICS (IBM Information Control System) and through its dialogue subsystem for online retrieval (AQUARIUS, A Query and Retrieval Interactive Utility System).

The Ministry has its own computing network, known as PIC (Points of Cultural Information), with its own terminals distributed in all the provincial capitals of the country. The PIC programme was started up by the Ministerio de Cultura in 1980 for the creation and distribution of data bases with a cultural content.

All types of organizations, both public and private, may connect up to this network, as well as private individuals. The connection can be done through the Switched Telephone Network (STN), at 300 or 1200 b/s, and through the Packet Switching Networks (Iberpac network, X-25 protocol).

At this moment some of the Ministerio de Cultura’s data bases are being incorporated for consultation through the Videotext service, which is provided by the IBERTEX Public Network, through specific Video text terminals or by card or modem on standard V-23.
