4. Session/Séance: Gonzâlez, Data Bases and long distance Communcation 4. 1. Archive Census Two data bases of a general type were begun in 1978. The first of them, the CARC data base (Spanish Archives Census) has as its objective to collect brief, general information on the greatest possible number of Spanish archives: both public or private, either in institutions or owned privately, belonging to Central or Local Administration, the Catholic Church or companies etc. Any Archive which contains information which could be considered as a part of Spanish National Documentary Heritage may be relevant to this data base. It includes some essential Archive data (name, address, telephone, timetable and services offered), and basic data on the documentary fonds it holds. The fieldwork is normally carried out province by province (Spain is divided into 50 provinces and initial work has been done already in 36 provinces). A working team, coordinated usually by the Director of the province’s Historical Archive, carries out the task of data collection, visiting the Archives directly. The information, which is normally gathered on data collection forms, is incorporated into the computing system directly in CIDA. In some cases they have collaborated in the publication of the census on certain provinces. More than 33 000 Archives are now included in this Spanish Archive Census. The Centro de Informaciôn Documental de Archivos has formally been entrusted with undertaking this task, under the 1985 Spanish National Historical Heritage Act. Since 1990 the project has been extended to the Latin American Archives, through the ALA. 4. 2. Archival Bibliography The second data base of a general nature, undertaken by the Centro de Informaciôn Documental de Archivos is the BARC data base (Archival Bibliography) which holds information on professional Archival bibliography received and analyzed in CIDA’s Library. This bibliography, which is also circulated in printed form every quarter through the CIDA Information Bulletin, is made up at present by more than 14 000 bibliographic references, including not only basic bibliographic data, but also summaries on the most significant books and articles. This data base forms an important part of the project initiated by the international Council on Archives (ICA) for the creation of an international data base on archival literature, RIILA (Repertoire International d’information sur la Littérature Archivi- stique). 4.3. Source Guide for the History of Italy Since 1985 other data bases of a more restricted type, known as Source Guides, have been started. These are data bases which contain information on document fonds deposited in different Spanish archives, but which relate to one common topic which gives name and content to the data base. 328
