socially, as well as by the concrete stage of the development of the phenomenon. Within the ethnically differing areas these differences, however, eventually seemed to have been ethnic differences, or their bearers interpreted them in this way. In places of an identical economiccultural type, i.e. in a unified cultural region, such differences were not numerous. Cultural region and ethnic boundary are two mutually independent phenomena each of which has a different basis. A cultural region is formed on the basis of the ecological, socioeconomic and historical conditions, and an ethnic boundary is based on the linguistic difference and on the different ethnic identity of the bearers of culture. As to ethnic identity, this is based on the cultural phenomena the difference of which is understood as ethnically characteristic. Among ethnically homogeneous villages from different cultural regions we can often find more marked cultural differences than in the case we have analyzed here. Such a conclusion might seem to be self-evident; nevertheless, it reassures us of the statement that a region which is unified from the cultural point of view can - and often also does - constitute (Kiliánová, 1994,53, Botik, 1996,196) an area for the life of ethnically different groups.
