A Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg Megyei Levéltár (Nyíregyháza, 1999)

Summary

SUMMARY Szabolcs- Szatmár- Bereg County Archives moved into a new and separate building at the end of 1999. It can be found at 4, Széchenyi street, Nyíregyháza. Almost all the records and documents of Szabolcs and only a fragment of those of Szatmár and Bereg counties are stored up and preserved here. Most of the documents that were issued after 1950 are still stored in a storage building in Varjúlapos. We possess approx. 5500 running metres of material, among them there are charters, diplomas, minutes of meetings, maps, cenzuses, registers, different documents of administration, education, associations and families, which are looked after by 24 employees. Our earliest document is a charter, which dates back to the end of the 12 th century. The material stored in our institution is studied by 400 people every year. It means altogether more than 2000 cases of research work. The research of local history is also helped by our research library of 14000 volumes. Quite a lot of people are interested in our series of lectures, exhibitions, local history competitions as well as the publications and volumes of essays and studies showing the local public administration, society, culture, economy and way of life of the county. The authors of these are not only the research workers of our institution but also other local, native and foreign historians studying the history of the area. One of the most important programs organized by the archives is the International Archives Days in autumn. Besides local and national historians and archivists there are some coíleauges from foreign archives and foreign experts who are invited to attend the conference. Here they can share the results of their latest research with each other. The information service of the archives is open from 8 a.m. till 4 p.m. on weekdays.
