ÖSSZEFOGLALÓK SUMMARY Medieval charters in the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county archives (1300-1525) Medieval charters are the oldest and most precious relics of Hungarian literacy. The charters were documents edited and made out in a special and pre-determined form. A charter was usually the written confirmation of some legal transaction. The Hungarian archives collect charters issued before the Battle of Mohács (1526) separately from documents of later times. The Archives of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County store the original copies of 50 medieval charters, and official transcriptions of a number of other charters. A total of 104 charters have been selected for the present volume. They are arranged in a chronological order. The charters included in the volume are usually about property disputes and other property matters. There are royal charters of property donations, inaugurations of landlords into their property and surveys of domains. Most of the royal charters in the volume were issued by Sigismund and Ladislaus II. The Palatine of Hungary and the Lord Chief Justice issued charters in order to settle legal disputes. In accordance with a wide-spread practice of the times, various religious organizations were authorized to settle legal disputes, and they also issued their charters. Such documents in the volume include charters issued by the Convent of Lelesz and the Chapter of the Cathedral of Várad. Approximately one third of the charters are related to the former territory of Szabolcs, Szatmár and Bereg Counties. These are the documents of law suits or certifications of nobility. The legal issues were arbitrated at the Magistrate Court of the County of Szabolcs, and the documents had either been directly sent to the county archives or were collected later. Villages and towns of the neighbouring counties, for example Haj du, are frequently mentioned in the charters, but more remote parts of the country, for instance the Counties of Fejér and Gömör also appear. Fragments of family archives from these counties found their way to Nyíregyháza. The volume publishes the original texts of the archives in Latin, after a thorough reading and interpretation. A summary in Hungarian is added to each of the archives. The summary also contains a description of the state of the charter, the references of the archives, bibliographical references and notes. The biographical and geographical names mentioned in the charters of the volume, as well as the subjects headings, are arranged into one index. The volume is complete with the colour reproductions of five charters.
