LÁSZLÓ, GÉZA: The Reminiscence of Pál Osváth, a Lieutenant of 1848-1849, of the Tenth Battalion of the Hungarian Territorial Army (Source-Publication) Pál Osváth was born in Kismarja, Bihar county on 4 January 1831. He was at school in Kismarja, Derecske and Debrecen. He studied arts. From the autumn of 1847 he became as teacher of the Calvinist particular school in Nagykálló. He was among the first to volunteer to become a Hungarian soldier ('honvéd') in Nagykálló under the influence of the events of 1848 as early as the end of May. He got into the Sixth company of the Tenth Battalion. He was taken to the Southland as a corporal, where he fought until 28 December 1848. After that he took part in several battles of the winter and spring military expeditions. He got slightly wounded when Budavár was captured. Then he was transferred to the hussars and was promoted second-lieutenant. He got wounded again in Temesvár. After the capitulation he returned home from Lugos. While living in exile he taught in different villages of Bihar county. From 1851 he worked as the village notary of Berettyószentmárton. After the establishment of the gendarmery, from 24 April 1859 he was the police officer of Sárrét district of Bihar county until 1884. In the meantime from 1882 to 1892 he worked as the postmaster of Biharkeresztes. At the end of his life he moved to Budapest. He died there on 13 February 1908 but he was buried in Biharkeresztes on 16 February. Besides his work he was always interested in the events of the historical and ethnographical past. First of all he collected a number of data on his homeland, Bihar county and Sárrét district of that. This work is especially important for the military historians. The recollection of Pál Osváth makes it possible to complete the dim parts of the history of the Tenth Battalion. He gives a detailed description of the fights in Southland and the capture of Budavár. His work tells us a lot of so far unknown facts about several honvéd comrades of his coming from Szabolcs and Bereg counties. He may have written his reminiscence using his earlier notes in the years following the suppression of the war of independence. He revised it before it was published. While the personal or delicate parts were left out, some other parts were completed with current and futher data.
