Báthori joined the two kings' fight and the castle of Ecsed often changed hands in those years. In the second half of the 16th century the Turkish conquerors reached the castle so Vallaj was forced to pay tax for several years. In 1605 the Ecsed-branch of the Báthori family died out so the estate of Ecsed was placed into the hands of Gábor Báthori, who came from the Somlyó-branch. After the death of the prince (1613) his stepbother, András Báthori possessed it for a short period of time, but the Captain of Szatmár, András Dóczy occupied the castle of Ecsed and the estate was taken over by the treasury. Besides the ownership-history the essay studies the social strata of Vállaj on the basis of the taxation-register (1549-1555). It aíso publishes the geographical and serfs' names and it deals with the religious life, as well. The goldsmiths of Nagybánya were popular with customers, who gave them orders for making golden or silver goods. They worked for the Bethlen family and the court of the prince as well as the master builders, who were employed on building sites by György Rákóczi I. The reconstruction of the castle of Kővár took place at that time, as well. Several bricklayers and stonecutters were employed there. The artificers of Nagybánya took part in the renovation of the castles of Szatmár and Munkács. Besides goldsmiths and bricklayers the activity of carpenters, smiths and locksmiths was also remarkable as they were often employed beyond the borders of their town.
