SUMMARIES N. FODOR, JÁNOS: The Administration and the Officials of Szabolcs County between 1301 and 1387 At the turn of the 13th and 14th century the legally uniform layers of the Hungarian society, nobility and serfdom developed. However, these layers were differentiated considering their origins and financial situation. Studying the nobility and officials of Szabolcs County in the Angevin-period we can see that the nobility of the county was incomplete from a certain point of view. A real potentate could not be found among them so the Lord Lieutenant of the county did not come from the noblemen of the county. The financial stratification of the nobility was not as evident as in other parts of the country but it really existed. The deputy-lieutenants were the Lord Lieutenant's vassals. Half ot them were members of noble families, the other half originated from other counties. In the beginning district administrators were descendants of the most distinguished families. Later, affer the position bad been devaluated, people of gentry birth became more frequent in this function. The members of the most distinguished families could be found among the jurors of the county. Those who were not so well-off entered the service of the king. The administrative structure of Szabolcs county can be justified with data since 1285. The role of Kalló as a county official centre was stabilized at the beginning of the 14th century. The lists of functionaries of the county from the Angevin-period that are published here help with futher studying of the era. SÍPOS, FERENC: Fragments from the Past of Vállaj (From the Beginnings Until the End of the Báthori Family's Reign) The essay is a survey of the history of Vállaj from the beginnings until the end of the Báthori family's reign (1613). The past of the settlement located in Szatmár county was full of hardship. As far as we know its name was first mentioned in 1335. From the 11th century Vállaj belonged to the monastery of Sárvár of the Gutkeled clan. In the 15th century after the ruin of the monastery it was annexed to the Báthori family's estate in Ecsed. The Báthori family separated from the clan at that time. Vállaj, which joined the estate in Ecsed, was located in the neighbourhood of the Károlyi domains at the edge of the huge Báthori domain lying in several counties. In the 14th-15th century there was an argument between the Báthori and the Károlyi families. The armed serfs of Vállaj also took part in the fight. After 1526 the role of the castle of Ecsed became significant, the inhabitants of Vállaj also took part in its defense. András
