county a suffocating and intolerable burden. For several years, the town made efforts to shake off this burden, but to no avail. Finally, in 1833, the magistrate of Nyiregyhaza decided to apply for a royal privilege in order to secure the rights and independence of the town. For submitting the applications successfully, the magistrate wanted to gain the support of as many members of the local local and national nobility as possible. Mihaly Biermann, an agent living in Vienna, was appointed as the official facilitator of their issue. It took four years to make a decision. During this time the delegates of Nyiregyhaza visited Buda and Vienna several times, which cost the town a lot of money. Finally, on the 30 th of August 1837, the signature of Emperor Ferdinand V was on the long-awaited charter of privilege that declared Nyiregyhaza a free provincial town. In accordance with the charter, the town received a high degree of autonomy — only the election of officials was supervised by the Governor of Szabolcs County. According to the budget calculations of the town, Nyiregyhaza paid a total of Ft 20,000 to the people and organisations supporting the cause and participating in managing the application. Sources available also indicate that certain sums of money were paid out in an illegal way, e. g. as bribes, but these sums are, naturally, not included in the budget calculations. It is therefore only possible to estimate how much money was paid out in this way. But no matter how much the people of Nyiregyhaza finally paid for their independence, the money is virtually insignificant as compared to the advantages ensured by the charter of privilege. It was a lot more than a sheet of richly ornamented paper — it was the token of the development of the community, which helped the town in preserving its advantage, achieved during the re-settlement, over the rest of the provincial towns. Agota Henzsel NYIREGYHAZA'S RENTED LANDS AT CSASZARSZALLAS (1837-1869) After the arrival of new settlers to Nyiregyhaza in the 18th century rented meadows played and important role in the town's economy. The total area of the rented lands sometimes equaled that of the lands the town owned. The meadows rented in the vicinity of the town were easily accessible and they were used as ploughlands. Lands rented farther away from the town were used for nomadic stock-raising. Members of the Kallay family, landlords of Nagykallo not far from Nyiregyhaza, often leased their lands to Nyiregyhaza, in need of agricultural lands. Peter Kallay, Sub-Prefect of Szabolcs County, entered into a lease contract with Nyiregyhaza regarding an estate of 4,500 acres at Csaszarsz£ll&s in 1837. The land was owned by the Kallay family.
