The can design changed considerably over the decades. The first ring-tab beer can was introduced in 1964 in Dortmund at the Interbrau exhibition; the design had been patented in 1963 based on the idea of an American picnicker. In 1971 the edged design of the can was introduced. Today, the vast majority of cans are either 0.33 or 0.5 litre containers, though cans measuring 0.4 litres are also gaining in popularity.
