ID Ml DID IC U It E II LT The Royal Hungarian Ministry of Defence set up the War Aid Bureau on an Austrian model for supporting disabled soldiers, war widows and orphans. Consisting of enlisted troops, reserves and volunteers, the Bureau organised collections and charity events and sold war memorabilia and other items. It often cooperated with the Red Cross and the Augusta Urgent Relief Fund. Ill UIIÜIIIN RED CROSS The Red Cross Society of the Countries of the Holy Crown of Hungary was established in 1881 as part of the international organisation. Its main area of activity during the war was taking care of wounded or disabled soldiers, and to that end it maintained camp hospitals, aid programmes, auxiliary hospitals, recuperation stations and hospital trains. Between 1914 and 1918a total of 1400 professional and over 10.000 volunteer nurses worked in the various health institutions of the Red Cross which also provided training courses for nurses. The information service it ran assumed an increasingly important role in the war when people went missing in masses. The service provided information of the whereabouts and state of prisoners of war and displaced people and, where it could it, immediately notified the families of those killed in action. Donations to the Red Cross went to charities for poor people and contributed to the work of charity organisations. ID DD EXU1BITI0NS One of the widespread types of charity events were the exhibitions held in cities in the hinterland. These exhibitions focused on war events, different branches or units of the army; they were educational, exploring military health issues; or displayed a mixed variety of interesting topics. Since the takings invariably went to a charity, and often involved renowned artists and architects, they were promoted on posters that featured high-quality graphic work and design. Many souvenirs were produced in connection with these events, whose sales also went to charity.
