FESTIVITY During the war, the church festivals, such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and Whitsun, were more modest affairs, not only because of the absence of family members. There was a widespread social need to make frontline soldiers and prisoners of war aware of the importance of the festivals, and thousands of packages were delivered to them by military post from family and anonymous senders and charity organisations. Similarly, charity events sought to provide for one-parent families often deprived of their only bread-earner.
