Up to the second half of the 16th century among the works of the guilds also technical ropes can be found beside ropes produced for the agriculture. At the time of the turkish rule and later during the Kuruts'war more and more guilds were established in the Hapsburg Hungary and Transylvania. In the 18th and 19th centuries life and rights of the guilds was regulated and limited by the increasing state interference according to the principles of the industrial freedom. Sincf- the second half of the 18th century hemp-growing had spread and especially in the South under the inspiration of the central power. On this basis of raw material rope making industry took a new leaps of life. Since ready made ropes can be transported more easily as bulky fibre the marketing character of the industry strengthened. The Hemp Spinning Factory in Szeged the only for the time being factory producing ropes has developed from guilds. This study reviews some new details about special customs of rope making guilds e.g. the taxes, initiation of journeymen, wandering and the role of the spinning belt.
