Dr Dezső Baróti candidate in arta, researcher of the Petőfi Literary Museum analyzed the rela­tions between the East-European comparative histo­ry of literature and the history of the theatre. He stated that a constant presence - conscious of instinctive - of elements of the folklore is cha­racteristic of the East-European literature, the­atre and to a certain extent of its music. In our and in the neighbouring countries the popular trends in literature have been described, but a comparative synthesis of these is still laoking. Perhaps that is why researchers of different countries interpret the same phenomana in diffe­rent ways. The definition of the distinctive fea­tures of the popular trends in the theatre and drama would add a great deal to the solving of many problems. The accurate definition of the particular features of the East-European enlightment is equal­ly in the interest of the theatrical and literary sciences. Here the central problem of enlightment had been the creation of a national language. How did the theatre contribute to the creating of a national literary language? It is very important for all East- European countries to solve thia problem. The lecturer also delt with the question of romanticism, then he analyzed the problems of the - 130 ­V
