Dr Tekla Dömötör, candidate in arts, department chief of the Institute of Theatrical Sciences delt with the formation of the national theatres in Eastern Europe. She mentioned an interesting phenomenon, namely that while in many western countries which had been the birthplaces of the modern professional theatre today there is no national theatre /e.g. in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands: in England it is just being organized/ most of the East European countries have had it for a century or even longer. How can this be explained? First of all by the fact, that professional acting developed in the West and in the East under different historical and social conditions The prerequisite of the development of the 16th century professional theatre in Western Europe were, naturally, very complex, but this start is wanting some motives characteristic of the professional acting of Eastern Europe born about two centuries later. These are: the idea of becoming an independent nation, the conscious emphasizing of the importance of the vernecular and of the bourgeois ideology.
