Most of the East-European countries have chosen socialism in the 2oth century. Socialist theatre raises - both in its contents and form - a problem concerning even the nonsocialist countries in Eas­tern Europe: popular trends and democratic spirit in the drama. Naturally several other problems oould be mentioned here, the solution of which can be at­tained through the common work of East-European countries. Organization of this work is going on. Dr Benoe Szaboloai Kosauth-prize laureate^ fellow of the Hungarian Aoademy of Sciences, di­rector of the Bartók Archives, delivered a lecture on the problems of East-European music. He stated that the countries of Eastern Europe entered the sphere of cultured music between 1750 and 1850. During this period the Russian, the Hungarian, the Czech, the Rumanian, the Jugoslavian national opera was born. This late date can be explained by the fact, that in all these countries feudalism had still been prevailing during these years. The small stratum of the bourgeois intelligentsia re­cognised the significance of the opera at once, and eagerly demanded the making up for this debt. This - 128 -
