Foreword

Foreword to the book „70 Years of the Home Oil Industry" People of every nations of the earth try to get to know better and better the geographicalgeological conditions of their areas, to posses and utilize their surface and depth treasures. This ambition also concerns our home and - taking into consideration our subject -the hydrocarbons, too. In 2007, 70 years ago, after the 1 st World War the industrial oil production - due to the successful exploratory activities - began in the decreased territory Hungary. ( )ur home entered the camp of countries producing hydrocarbon. What is necessary to the successful exploratory work? First of all prepared geological experts, who are able to create a more and more exact model on the geological structure of the country and on the perspectives of the useful minerals formed during the geological events. Secondly the exploratory organization has to possess geophysical instruments and methods to evaluate the data, besides drilling rigs penetrating into the earth's crust and giving useful informations on the depth, and experts operating all these as well. Both conditions becomes a fiction when one of them is not to be found or there is not the suitable financial basis. In the area of the historical Hungary the geological researches was going on systematically, the geophysical measurements with the Eötvös torsion balance led to the discovery of the hydrocarbon occurrences of industrial importance. Unfortunately these occurrences were disannexed as the result of the peace agreement of Trianon. In the first decades of the 20th century the home geologists proved with geological map methods and thought perspective the anticlines of Budafa and Lovászi in the SW Transdanubian. The presence of these anticlines was confirmed by the geophysical measurements later. The Hungarian treasury hadn't the sufficient financial possibility to continue the research with deep well drilling on this area. This time we had geological model, geophysics with international reputation, hopeful geological formations in the depth, research conception. On the other hand the economical basis, the contractor with strong capital wasn't found. In the 1920 years an English-Persian firm obtained rights to research and drilled on the deeper wing of the Budafa anticline, but it didn't got economical result. This unproductive activity spoiled a lot on the judgement of the possibilities according to the petroleum geology of the area. For this reason the activities of Dr. Simon Papp have great importance because he was able to achieve with his forceful arguments and convincing presentation of the petroleum geological
