MŰHELY - Nováki Gyula: Kuruc kori várak, sáncok Dunaföldvár – Solt – Dunakömlőd térségében
Dunaföldvár fortress (Illustrations 4-6.) built in the 16-17 th century was owned alternately by the kuruc an the Austrian imperial army. The map of 1704 shows its dimensions. The city as built over it, only the 16th century tower is still standing. The excavations of Éva Kozák made between 1964-1966 had disvovered the pile remains of the interior board fence originating partly from the kuruc period. Solt fortification (Illustration 5.) used to be on the left bank of the Danube, a lot of facts are known concerning its history, and it was always owned by the kuruc. It has no trace on the fields, on the basis of the 1704 map its original place can only be guessed. Its representation is schematic, no details are known. Opposite to it on the other bank must have been a bridgehead fortification, although it has no clear trace by now. Dunaföldvár - fortification of the Upper Island (Illustrations 5, 7.) Its site is well shown on the 1704 map, but the schematic representation is far from the real situation. In the flood area forest a simple, longitudinal, low hill can partly be seen even today with the remains of a low fortification on its northern side. It was a starting point of the sieges of the fortress of Dunaföldvár several times. Dunakömlőd - Imsós fortification (Illustrations 8-10.) It is in the former great bend of the Danube (Imsós-peninsula) along the former left bank laying in a straight line covered with forests. In 1705 it had a role in the battle, following it was covered by flood and not mentioned anymore. Opposite to it on the narrow former right bank the existence of a bridgehead fortification was presumed without any data. The great bend of the Danube was cut in 1840 arpund the city of Paks, since then the riverbed has got several kms away and the whole Imsós-peninsula got to the right bank. Dunakömlőd - Bottyán-fortress (Illustrations 11-16.). There are several facts concerning its history. The kuruc general, Bottyán had ordered its building on the basis of his own plans in the spring of 1705. It was occupied by the imperial army in June, but was soon abandoned. At the beginning of 1706 it was occupied again by the imperials but was never used anymore by any of the parties. The fortress was built on the place of a former Roman fortified camp (Lussonium). The excavation has been carried on since 1972 by Zsolt Visy, archaeologist. The remains of the wooden structure of the fortification was found. The territory is not used today, its part towards the former right bank is partly fallen down. The author gives at the and a short survey of the wooden construction of the fortifications of the kuruc period, which are esentially similarly built to the 16- 17 th century.
