MŰHELY - Galacsik Zsolt: Adatok a szécsényi Szentháromság-szobor történetéhez

Zsolt GALCSIK CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF THE SZÉCSÉNY TRINITY STATUE In the centre of Szécsény, in Nógrád county on St.Nicholas square is standing the 18th century Trinity statue. Its owner and caretaker is the Roman Catholic Church of Szécsény. Not much is known about the history of the Baroque statue, even in local historical sources. Our purpose was to give a summary of our knowledge and add a few facts to them. According to monument topographies the statue is a simple Baroque work. The group of statues, with the figures of St. Francis and St. Anthony on the two sides, stand on a column. It was built by count Zsigmond Forgách in 1761. The statue was restored in the 1880's, but the next restoration took place only hundred years later. In the 1930' s the statue was destroyed to such an extent that restoration seemed to be necessary. The Franciscan convent in Szécsény celebrated the 600th anniversary of its foundation in 1932. Large-scale restorations were started in connection with the anniversary and the Church planned to erect a new statue, as - according to experts - the original was in such a bad condition that they could not be restored. Trying to provide the monetary sources for the works the member of parliament of Szécsény was asked. The sculptor János Branczeicz was commissioned with the plans and the work. He made several plans, which were assessed by Ottó Szőnyi, officer of The National Committee of Monument Protection. The report on the result of the investigation states that the original position of the statue was changed, the height of the columns and the statues was decreased. The figures have remained, but their Baroque character was less striking, compared to the original. The statues were made of artificial stone with iron insert. Works began on 4th July 1934 and the Trinity monument was consecrated on 21st October. The place of the original statues is not known, their state is documented only on two early 20th century postcards.
