Die vollkommene Ablehnung, mit der die fachliche Öffentlichkeit im mittleren Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts die Denkmalrestaurierungen der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und darin das imposante Lebenswerk von Franz Storno d.Ä. behandelt hat, gehört heute bereits der Vergangenheit an. Natürlich vermissen wir in unserer Bauund Kunstgeschichte die unter dem Titel der Wiederherstellungen zerstörten originalen strukturellen und Verzierungselemente weitgehend, und auch für den Verlust der abgebrochenen Barockaltäre entschädigen uns nur selten die an ihrer Stelle errichteten jüngeren neugotischen Werke. Das Zeitalter des denkmalpflegerischen Purismus, die Epoche des Historismus war aber ebenso eine historisch-künstlerische Periode wie die früheren, und ihre Tugenden zeichnen sich vor unseren Augen immer deutlicher ab. Der Kunstfleiß und die oft mehrere Jahrzehnte andauernde, sorgfältige Vorbereitung, von denen die nun in Sopron ausgestellten Pläne von Franz Storno d.Ä. zeugen, verdienen wohl unbedingte Anerkennung und weitere wissenschaftliche Zuwendung. Pál LŐVEI THE MEMORIAL EXHIBITION OF FERENC STORNO THE ELDER IN SOPRON In the spring of 1997 the Museum of Sopron has organized an exhibition with the title ,,The beginnings of monument protection in Sopron. The works of Ferenc Storno the elder 1858-1890". The classification and inventory of the pictorial and written documents of the Storno family's (Ferenc Storno the elder and his sons, Ferenc the younger and Kálmán) restorer and artistic activity - drawing series of architectural surveys, plans for monument reconstruction, about 170 sketchbooks, family correspondance on matters of monument protion, valuable publications - has begun at the beginning of 1984. The majority of the work was done by the art historians Eva Askercz and András Nemes. A new, more detailed view could be acquired as a result of the publication of the Storno material on the second half of the 19th century-beginning of 20th century Hungarian monument protection, and the architectural and restoration history of several ecclesiastical buildings reconstructed at the period. It is very important however to inform the public, as the Storno house and its collection is a favourite place for tourists visiting Sopron. Beside them the interest of local residents was aimed with the choice of the subject of this exhibition, showing local characteristics to the visitors. The exhibition - as a result of the ideological and stylistic character of the oeuvre gave a homogeneous view, in spite of Storno' s manner of working, returning again and again to certain buildings.
