MŰHELY - Koppány Tibor: Az ösküi kerek templom és helyreállítása
the tower-like building was the Romanic round church presumed by literature. Above the 18th century, late baroque, stone framed gate the windows on both sides proved to be original, the walls of the Roman church were finished sixty cms above them. The upper part above it is later, baroque stonework. The whole medieval height of the church could not be stated, together with the semicircular choir it had been destroyed during the Turkish occupation. The exterior walls were carved by roughly worked, small size lying prismatic stones. This makes possible the supposition that the church might have been built around the end of the 11th century. However, concluding from its plan, mass and size the same result could be reached. Considering its building no facts could be found, just like its medieval history. The nearby castle of Veszprém was occupied by the Turks in 1552, the village of Öskü was abandoned by its inhabitants at this time, and the church might have been destroyed then. Its reconstruction took place when the inhabitants resettled. The treaty of this dates back to 1700, according to this the roof of the newly rebuilt church should be built in the form of „wallische Hauben". So the raising of the walls of the Romanic round church and its cupola was made around 1700. Originally a smaller lantern was standing on top of the cupola with a bell hanging in it. The lantern has disappeared in 1878, at the occasion of the latest reconstruction, the memory of which is preserved on the plate with Latin inscription above the gate, to be seen even today.
