The new conservation legislation of 1974 in Hessen did not take immediate effect. Its detailed provisions were first published in 1975/76 and the conservation authorities (Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Hessen) still had not enough financial resources or personnal to carry out the provisions of the law. Owners of historic buildings did not immediately fulfil their new responsiblities. Churches were still being demolished or left empty in 1975/76 so that the idea was born by the FAK to produce a book with catalogue on timber-framed churches in Hessen. Compiled by 8 authors and first published in 1976 the book „Fachwerkkirchen in Hessen" in the series „Blaue Bücher" (publisher K. R. Langewiesche Nachfolger Hans Köster, Königstein/ Taunus) has now been reprinted 4 times and altogether over 30.000 copies have been sold - a bestseller for this type of publication. For many timber-framed churches not mentioned in official inventories or lists - they were not considered important enough compared with stone buildings - the catalogue in „Fachwerkkirchen in Hessen" provided
