(Grundriss Allgemeine Geographie) Cholnoky’s fluvial geomorphology today Dr Dénes Lóczy Jenő Cholnoky (1870-1950), a prominent professor of Hungarian physical geography, contributed significantly to the study of fluvial erosion. The paper compares his views with recent Hungarian and international literature to identify his opinions which have been most influential to the development of Hungarian fluvial geomorphology and are partly still present in text-books. In addition, his terminology of fluvial processes and landforms is investigated and his concepts on river stages (channel patterns) and terrace formation are evaluated. Although he was a follower of W.M. Da­vis’ theory of the geomorphological cycle, he relied on his field observations to propose several flexible original ideas for the study of river action.
