TRADITIONS AND VALUES OF GEOGRAPHY AT PÉCS Dr. József Tóth The first university in Hungary, founded by Louis the Great in 1367, had a short life but was a contemporary of such famous institutions as the universities of Prague (1348) and Vienna (1365). The desire for founding a university in the city could only be fulfilled after the tragedy of the Trianon Peace Treaty, when the university of Pozsony, attached to Czechoslovakia as Bratislava, was moved to Pécs, where teaching began in the 1923/24 school year. Geography teaching was organized by Gyula Prinz. In 1940/41 the Philological Faculty closed at Pécs and as compensation the idea of creating a group of historical and geographical sciences emerged in 1942. In 1943 the Transdanubian Scientific Institute was formed and, merged with various departments of the Geographical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Human Geography in Budapest, Alföld Department in Békéscsaba and a research group in Kecskemét), the Centre for Regional Research of the Academy was established. Supplying teachers for 8-class primary school education, a Pedagogical Academy was founded in Pécs, training teachers for five subjects (including natural history-geography) in 1948. A central decision was made in 1981 to re-organize the Academy into a university faculty, the Pedagogical Faculty of the Janus Pannonius University, the third among faculties. In 1989 the Institute of Geography, which is now constituted of nine departments, was formed. There are 78 students who completed their studies at the Doctoral School, founded in 1993. Against this historical background concentration in geography at Pécs is of larger scale than generally in other sciences. Translated by Dr. Dénes Lóczy 37
