Gold-washers in the valley of San-tao-kou." The positive belongs to the MFM Cholnoky inheritance; negative: MNM ELTE deposit, LII/734. People washing out gold from the gravel bed of the wide valley in the region of Tien­pao-san, in Cholnoky's opinion coming from Siberia, appeared frightening figures. 'Muscovian mongrels' in the eyes of the young engineer. So the dozen soldiers ordered to Cholnoky's protection proved to be really reassuring. Until Cholnoky's visit, the San­tao-kou Basin had been unknown land for the people of the old continent. 40. The director of the French syndicate, De Marteau asked Cholnoky to give expertise to the operations against the floods in the region of Shao-hsing-fu. They had travelled from Shang-hai on a 'European-like' dwelling boat drawn by a steamer, till they reached the Great Canal. The photograph recorded one of the journey's events.
