Police boat on the Great Canal in March 1897. celloidine, stuck onto cardboard Cardboard: 32.8x23.9 cm picture: 17x12.5 cm Pressmark: Kína 248. original negative: Kh.l8.*glass, 13x18 cm Caption: " Police boat on the Great Canal. 29.III.1897." The positive belongs to the MFM Cholnoky inheritance; negative: MNM ELTE deposit, LII/943. The canals substituted Chinese long-distance traffic. Because of the dense network of canals, loads of bridges had to be built in towns. Cart tracks were almost unknown at that time, except around Shang-hai. So it can be understood, why the policemen did travel by sailing-boat. 42. The region of the Etna's crater in March 1907. MNM ELTE deposit: L 97/28 In the spring 1907, Cholnoky already teaching in Kolozsvár and his students participated in an Italian field trip, accepting the imitation of Lajos Lóczy Senior. They set off in the early hours of 26 March to conquer the more than 3000 metres high, giant volcano. Because of the difficult terrain, the suffocating gases and the air growing sparser, only a part of the company was able to reach the observatory near the peak. Even the aging professor, Lóczy, did not risk to climb higher. The concave depression of the crater covered with stones was a disappointment to Cholnoky and to some of his steady companions.
