Cholnoky set off on 21 April 1897 from Shang-hai towards Beijing on the board of the China Navigation Company's steamer called Tung-chow. After the railway connection in Tung-ku the last kilometres had to be done by the passenger car shown in the picmre, because the railway line was not yet completed. The two hours' ride was so exhausting and inconvenient for the European researcher used to fiacre that he rather walked for the most part of the distance. 37. During the waiting he walked around the region famous for its ore mine with the curiosity of a geographer, and he recorded the picturesque scenery of the rocky landscape slashed by the rivers on several drawings and photographs.
