ABSTRACTS SZABOLCS VABGA: THE INVENTORY OF ESTATE OF MÁRK HORVÁTH, CAPTAIN OF SZIGET, FROM 1561 (SOURCE PUBLICATION) We have relatively plenty of information about the life of Márk Horváth, who led the defence of Szigetvár in 1556. Despite this, there are some blank areas left, because we do not know either the years of his youth or the fate of his inheritage. Therefore any document which provides new data is of great importance. Such a source is the inventory of estate of Szigetvár's captain, which was prepared by the executors of his testament sent to the castle in 1561. It reflects the material culture of a typical soldier-nobleman's lifestyle, where arms, horses and other similar equipment prevail. The lack of the objects of intellectual refinement is conspicuous, although it might have been due to the fact that the Horváth family's residence was not Szigetvár. The list also contains the names of the homo novus baron and some circumstances of the burial. MÁRIA NAGY-TÓTH: THE LETTERS OF VALENTIANUS PURGOLT, THE NEO-CHRISTIAN PHYSICIAN OF THE BATTHYÁNY FAMILY, 1622-1636 The author publishes the letters written by Valentianus Purgolt, court physician of Ferenc Batthyány (II), to his master, which are kept at the Hungarian National Archives. Although some stages of the doctor's life are obscure, on the basis of his letters it can be stated that he performed his work faithfully and reliably. He provided Batthyány with up-to-date information on the timely political situation, the events happening at the Court of Vienna and in the 30-year war, mediated in the winetrade and mining affairs, and managed the personal affairs of the Batthyány family. The letters show that not only Ferenc Batthyány (II) and his court, but also the Saxon prince-elector and the Court of Vienna turned to him with confidence: in return of his services he was granted a manor and was admitted among the members of the Czech gentry. As the title indicates, the author plans to continue the study, based mainly on source publication. PÉTER DOMINKOVITS: THE URBÁRIUM OF „NAGYBAJOM" FROM THE YEAR 1635 (SOURCE PUBLICATION) The source published gives an insight into the less-known 17th century conditions in some Somogy County territories under Turkish rule. The source covers 25 settlements of a significant dominium, temporarily united through right of pledge and inheritance in 1635. They were of a heterogeneous ethnic composition (Hungarian, Croatian), of a differentiated structure of properties, with a taxpaying population burdened with significantly different services in each settlement. On the basis of the research, it may be supposed that it is the 17th century urbárium of the one-time estate of Korokna, gained and enlarged by Mihály Koroknay. Unfortunately, the history of its origin is unknown. Similarly 7 , there are no data on how this source, named after the most significant settlement, for lack of something better, got into the document-inheritance of János Tolnay, a lawyer of Ferenc Nádasdy (III), Lord Lieutenant of Vas County, Lord Chief Justice. Tolnay very often worked at the law-courts of Sopron and Vas Counties but to a lesser degree even in Zala County. A systematic survey of the sources related to his activity as a lawyer may answer this question. At the same time, the proprietor's identification was assisted by László Solymosi's work of model value, elaborating the medieval and early modern history of Nagybajom.
