Csengey Dénes levele a New York Times szerkesztőjének515 December, 2, 1989 To the Editor of the New York Times Dear Mr. Editor, I am writing to you from Hungary, quite exactly from the side of a bier. My father died a few days ago, and has not yet been buried. You can understand how important I consider my present letter if I break the silence of mourning in order to write to you. After the referendum held in my country a week ago, the Hungarian press printed passages from your paper, causing a shock to many here by claiming that leaders of the Hungarian Democratic Forum were anti-Semitic, and that this is the motive shaping the policies of the largest opposition party of Hungary. According to this reasoning, we would carry on a political controversy with the Alliance of free Democrats because many among its leaders were Jewish. Moreover, all this is presented in a way that suggests that one of us said this to your correspondent, Henry Kamm. Since I feel closely involved in this accusation, I must tell you that your correspondent is ill informed in the matter. In fact, it is one of the foundation stones of the political philosophy and program of the Hungarian Democratic Forum, that we protect human rights, and among them with special emphasis the national, ethnic and religious minorities, striving to improve their legal 514 Csengey Dénes válaszlevele a New York Times főszerkesztőjének: a levél kifejezte Csengey Dénes megdöbbenését, mivel az amerikai napilap kifejezetten antiszemita pártnak jellemezte az MDF-et. Csengey kiemelte, hogy az MDF erőteljesen kiáll az emberi és kisebbségi jogokért, vagyis alapvetően nem is lehet és soha nem is lesz antiszemita elemeket képviselő párt. Az esetet a magyar belpolitikában kialakult belső viták hamis külföldi leképződésének értékelte. Egyúttal kérte a napilap főszerkesztőjét, hogy biztosítson helyet válaszlevelének a New York Times napilap hasábjain. Csengey Dénes levelét a New York Times nem közölte, [tartalmi kivonat] 515 Henry Kamm az előbbiekben említett november 25-ei írását követően 26-án és 27-én is jelentetett meg írást a magyar népszavazással kapcsolatosan a New York Timesban. 377
