Dokumentumok az MDF korai történetéből situation and broaden their autonomy. Therefore we have never been and we will never be either anti-Semitic or the enemies of any other minority. We do shape judgements about the ideas of your political partners, but never about their racial background. It would lead to tragedy if the controversies of Hungarian political life became imbued with such a poisonous latent political content. Therefore whoever works in this direction, even though unawares or wrongly informed, does not only prefer hearsay to facts but also threatens the unity of our nation, the purity of our political life, and ultimately the very integrity of our burgeoning democracy. At the same time, the political consequences of this incident stand in opposition to the statements of support for Hungary made by President George Bush on behalf of the United States. I know that it is the Malta summit which now occupies the center of attention, and that in your office, one of the big news center of the world, nothing can be more uninteresting than a comment concerning a week-old daily new item, coming from a small country hardly known. I think that every person and every organization has the right to wipe the slimy marks of slander off his face, to dispel mistaken allegations, and to state his own standpoint in his own voice in this crucial moral issue. Therefore I am asking you, Mr. Editor, to offer space to my letter in your paper. If you fulfill my request, not only will 1 be obliged to feel gratitude, but you will also take sides with truth. With sincere regards, Dénes Csengey Member of the Presidium Hungarian Democratic Forum 378
