Egy bizonyos, az Egyesült Államokban kezdetektől a kultúra részének tekintették a postát, akár ismerték, akár nem a német publicista J. Ludwig Klüber 1811-ben írott sorait: „A postát az emberiség érdekében az egész civilizált világhoz tartozó intézménynek kellene tekinteni és kezelni, mert ott ahol nem létezik a kultúra kaotikus éjszakába merül.”

Exhibition of Postal History in the American National Historical Museum

The survey introduces the postal history and the phylatelic exhibition of the American National Historical Museum founded in 1964. Related to the exhibition, it reveals the main stages of the history of the American post: from the postal law of immigrants issued in 1639 (Massachusetts) to the opening of the first modern post office in 1913, Dillsburg (Pennsylvania).

The most famous postmaster of America was Benjamin Franklin who, from a Philadelphian postmaster, became Deputy Senior Postmaster of the colonies in 1753.

Senior Postmaster, Henry Head issued important dispositions relating to the development of post. The emission in 1857 of the first perforated stamp is related to him and during the Civil War, he organized the mobile postal service. The development of the American post is illustrated by a rich material and original documents. A temporary exhibition on the history of the post is annually made in the museum and lectures are given in the auditorium of the exhibition hall on the past, present and future of the American post.
