Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi: The importance of the councils of Toledo of the 6th-8th centuries in the Spanish and in the universal canonical discipline of the Church

236 SZ. A. SZUROMI Collectio Novariensis (around 550); the Capitula Martini Bracarensis (later than 563); and the Epitome Hispanica (7th century).32 The most important canonical collection of this epoch was surely the Collectio Hispana, whose different redactions are also known.33 The first version was perhaps compiled in the time of Isidore of Seville (560-636) around 633 and 636.34 The material of the later Toledo Councils were attached to this redaction, up to 681. Further enlargement took place in the collection between 694 and 702, which cited other canons from the Toledo Councils up to 694, when Council of Toledo XVII was held. The Collectio Hispana was used not only in the region of Spain, but also in other territories of Europe. Moreover, it became the basic source of the most significant canonical collection of the Early Middle Ages, namely of the Decretales Pseudo-lsidorianae. Through the Pseudo-Isidorian Collection, the conciliar material of Toledo appeared in the Decretum Burchardi Wormatiensis (1008-1022)35 which was widespread in 11th century Europe, even in Hungary.36 Burchard quoted 66 canons from the Toledo Councils.37 But this material had its influence on the Gregorian Collections too. 32 Cf.
