THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COUNCILS OF TOLEDO 237 However, the famous Decretum Gratiani cited 104 canons from these councils.38 The Spanish ecclesiastical legislation of the 6th - 8th centuries has made a long-lasting effect on particular fields of the universal discipline of the Church. With the first codification in 1917, the Toledo canons have still remained on the interpretative horizon of the Western canon law, and indirectly, this links them in some cases - based on canon 6 of the new Code of Canon Law (1983) - to the present discipline of the Church. 38 Cone.
