PÁL KARDOS (1900-1971), a literary historian, translator, scholar at the Institute of the History of Literature in Debrecen. He translated the Book of Ruth{ 1944).

KÁROLY HERÉNYI translated The Song of Songs (1944).

BÉLA HAMVAS (1897-1968), a writer and philosopher, who after being expelled from Pozsony came to Budapest, where he studied German and music. He worked with Károly Kerényi. He escaped from the Russian front. Because he was strongly offended by György Lukács he lost his position as a librarian and as a result went out to the countryside where he became a worker and later a stockkeeper. He sought for and tried to understand the sense of existence and studied the crisis of modern civilization.108 He translated the apocrypha Apocalypse of Enoch (1945), which is more a literary rewriting than a philologically precise translation.

Oppression of the Churches

GELLÉRT BÉKÉS (1915-) a Benedictian writer, editor, Doctor of Theology. He studied in Pannonhalma and in Rome. At the St. Anselm University of Rome he taught Dogmatics and Ecumenism. For the basis of his New Testament translation, which he published with Patrik Dalos (Rome, 1951) he used the Vulgate and the critical text of Merk. This translation became equally popular in and outside the Catholic Church and had many editions.109

LÁSZLÓ BÓKAY translated 31 Psalms (1951)

MIKLÓS PÁLFFY translated Psalm passages (1964).

ANDOR SZÖRÉNYI, Old Testament professor of Roman Catholic Theological Academy of Budapest. He led the translation of a new Catholic version based upon the Greek text.
