György Benyik: Hungarian Bible Translation

242 GY. BENYIK GÁL studied at Budapest and Rome and though he wanted to be a Biblical professor, became a Dogmatist. Together, their translation is the first new Hungarian translation, and it is frequently compared to the Békés-Dalos version. The former is precise from the point of view of textual criticism, the latter is more fluent and smooth stilistically (1967). GERGELY BUDAI translated the New Testament (1967) from Greek. His version is a bit ponderous but precise. LÁSZLÓ RAVASZ (1882-1975)110 a Calvinist bishop, Doctor of Philosophy, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and of Hungarian Protestant Literary Society. He studied at Székely udvarhely, Kolozsvár and Berlin. In 1948 he was forced to resign from his bishopric and go abroad. He had many publications.111 His Bible translation was published in exile in Ligonier, USA (1971). ANGÉLA BELICZAI published some extracts of the modern Protestant version which was being compiled at that time. It is written in modern hungary language. (1972) THE ST. STEPHEN COMPANY EDITION! 1973) was to be a so called ecumenical version. Its basis was the Jerusalem Bible but modern translations were also used. As the result of the different abilities of its translators many mistakes can be found in this work. The translators were: FERENC GÁL, JÓZSEF GÁL, LÁSZLÓ GYÜRKI, ISTVÁN KOSZTOLÁNYI, FERENC ROSTA, SÁNDOR SZÉNÁSI and BÉLA TARJÁNYI. It was censored by BÉLA GÖRGÉNYI. With this translation the Catholic Church has officially returned to the Hebrew and Greek texts. They tried to free the Biblical names from Latin impact, except for those names already widely used in Hungarian such as Moses (Mózes), Elijah (Illés), Zechariah (Zakariás), Sion (Sion) etc. However, the translators did not change the differences between Catholic and Protestant spelling.
