CRYSTALLIZATION PROCESS OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL DISCIPLINE... 235 holy anointment, which is the vigil or the feast day of St. Mathew apostle.31 It was at the Second Council of Lyon (1274) where the most decisive ecclesiastical disciplinary position, summing up the Church’s standpoint concerning the holy anointment, was pronounced; the Council explicitly adopted it in among the other sacraments.32 St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)33, who died right before the Second Council of Lyon, in the Summa contra Gentiles underlines as the effect of the holy anointment the complete recovery of the soul from the wounds caused by sins, and the preparation of the Christian into God’s glory.34 Among the regional councils we must highlight the Council of Buda (Hungary) in 1279, under the influence of the Second Council of Lyon, whose canon 21 contains a prescription concerning the blessing of the holy oil .35 Besides, from among the 12th-13th century provincial councils we would like to refer to the Council of Toulouse in 1119 (Can. 9)36, the Council of Tours in 1163 (Can. 10)37, as well as the Council of Trier in 1227 (Can. 2 )38 and the Council of Lincoln in 1236 (Cann. 9, 13, 14, 17)3’, that had explicit provisions for the appropriate administration of the holy anointment for the dying (including even the liturgical vestment), and joins it with the sacrament of penance, or with those sacraments, whose administration takes place with holy oil .40 41 Also Gulielmus Durantis (f 1296) in his famous work, in the Speculum Iudiciale*', writes in a separate rubric about the holy anointment, which rubric deals primarily with the bless31 X 5. 40. 14: Friedberg II. 915. 32 Denzinger, H. - Bannwart, C.
