IUS CANONICUM - Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi, O.Praem., Crystallization process of the ecclesiastical discipline regarding the sacrament of extreme unction and its canon law historical sources

236 SZABOLCS ANZELM SZÚROM I, O.PRAEM. ing of oil in the cathedral, and administration of the anointment.42 Clem. 5.7.143, which contains the extensive 31st decretum of the Council of Vienne (1311- 1312), lists all those criteria that concern the administration, the recipient, and the effect of the holy anointment, and later, with an extensive theological justification, gets in among the provisions of the Council of Trient.44 The Council of Basel-Ferrara-Florence (1431-1445) touching upon the extrema unctio in the 8th session talking of the unity with the Armenians, determined its matter (olive oil), its blessing by the bishop, as well as its administration is possible in case of danger of death, and it belongs to its rite to anoint the eyes, the ears, the nose, the hands, the feet and the body in the area of the kidney.45 Because in a number of cases the sacramental nature of the extrema unctio was put into question, even before the reformation and especially in the 12th century (i.e. albigensiens, waldensiens)46, and in the beginning of the 16,h century not only its sacramentality but also its Biblical foundations were criticized, and it was branded as “historical lie”, it is understandable, that after the decisions of earlier councils the Council of Trient (1545-1563) also dealt with the clarification of the theological teaching and the disciplinary provisions of the administration of this sacrament in a discrete way .47 48 Therefore the second unit of Sessio XIV bears the titel Doctrina de sacramento extremae unctionis™, whose substantial explication received three chapters from the legislator, and then, connecting to this, the Church’s normative standpoint was summarized in four canons .49 In the introduction the Council makes a clear distinction between the 42 Lib. IV.
