In memóriám Ferenc Holló (1923-1997) Tibor KASSAI At the age of 74, Dr. Ferenc Holló, Titular Professor, Editor-in-Chief of Magyar Állatorvosok Lapja (Hungarian Veterinary Journal) died on 4 December 1997 of a sudden heart attack. He was born in Jászberény on 26 August 1923. Having survived the Second World War as a prisoner at the Mauthausen concentration camp, he graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the Veterinary School of Budapest in 1947. The life performance of Ferenc Holló was shared between two major fields of interest: parasitology and editorial activities. In the initial phase of his career, Ferenc Holló specialised in parasitology, and spent eight years working at the Central Veterinary Institute of Budapest as a labo­ratory parasitologist. In 1960, as a research fellow, he joined the Helminthological Re­search Laboratory newly established within the Department of Parasitology and Zoology of the Budapest University of Veterinary Science. From 1980, he held an FAO/UNDP assignment of two and a half years duration in Algeria as an expert in parasitology, and organized the first veteri­nary parasitological diagnostic laboratory of the country. Later on he became the lecturer of the optional subject "Tropical Parasitoses" at the Budapest University of Veterinary Science, and was appointed titular professor. As a research worker he was mainly concerned with practical aspects of the control of parasitoses, such as diagnosis, therapy and prevention. He was awarded the degree Candidate of Veterinary Science (Ph.D.) in 1965 for his thesis on lungworm disease of pigs. He published over 40 papers on matters related to parasitology. His most important work was the book entitled "Állatorvosi parazitológiai diagnosztika" (Veterinary Parasitological Diagnostics), which he co-authored with László Nemeséri. This book ran into three editions in Hungarian (1957,1961,1972) and was published in German (1964) and Spanish (1966) languages as well. He co-edited (together with Csaba Gallyas) the "Állatorvosi értel­mező szótár" (Veterinary Explanatory Dictionary) published in 1984.
