ABSTRACT. Ten species of monogeneans with three well developed anchors and one rudimentary anchor were collected from the gills of 7 species of freshwater fishes in Malaya. They are Heteronchocleidus buschkieli Bychowsky, 19 57 from Tri^hoj^i_s_viUatus; Trianchoratus acleithrium Price et Berry, 1966 from HeloStoma temmincki; Trianchoratus trichogasterium sp. n. from T r^ichoea s te r trichopterus; Trianchoratus leerium sp. n. fromTrichoga_ster leerl; Trianchoratus gussevi sp. n. , Trianchoratus grandis sp. n. and Trianchoratus parvulus sp. n. from Anabas J^^u_din_eus; Trianchoratus ophicephali sp. n. from Op hicejahalus ^tj-i_atu_s; Trianchoratus pahangensis sp. n. and Trianchoratus malayensis sp. n. from PpMcepJialios lucius. KEY WORDS: Description of new species, Monogenea, Trianchoratus, Heteronchocleidus, anabantoid fishes. INTRODUCTION Monogeneans with three well developed anchors and one rudimentary anchor were collected from the gills of 7 freshwater fishes viz. H elos to ma_t e m mi ncki_, Trie hoga st e r_ tri c hop ter us, T. leeri, A n a b a s J est udi neu_s , Op hic ejDh alu s atri at u s_, Jucius_and Tr^hoj^^s_yiUatu_s. Except for_0.^triatus_and G\ lucius which belong to the suborder Channoidei (family Channidae), the other host species belong to the suborder Anabantoidei (Nelson, 1984). The monogenean species from A^ Jesjujdineus, T\_ Jri chop ter us, 0^_striatu s_ and O^ lucius could be the three anchor monogeneans mentioned by ADAM (1964) who may have missed the fourth rudimentary anchor or mistaken it for a marginal hook. There are three hitherto described monogenean genera with three well developed anchors namely Heteronchocleidus Bychowsky, 19 57, Trianchoratus Price et Berry, 1966 and Eutri- anchoratus Paperna, 1969. Heteronchocleidus and Trianchoratus have 4 anchors (3 well developed and 1 rudimentary), while Eutrianchoratus has only 3 well developed anchors without a rudimentary anchor. The original diagnoses also indicate that there are 2 bars in Heteron chocleidus , 1 bar In Eutrianchoratus and no bars in Trianchoratus. PRICE (1968) included Heteronchocleidus and Trianchoratus into the subfamily Heteronchocleidinae in the family Dactylogyridae. In 1969 PAPERNA included the genus Eutrianchoratus into Heteronchocleidinae. However GUSSEV (1978) proposed that the 3 genera should be included in the subfamily Ancyrocephalinae Bychowsky et Nagibina, 1978. In this paper the subfamily Heteronchocleidinae Price, 1968 is retained but included into the family Ancyrocephalidae. There are also 4 new species of Monogeneans from Belontia ha_sselti_which possess 3 well developed anchors and 1 rudimentary anchor but with a bar, these species will be described elsewhere.
