2. ) Bunamidine hydrochloride tablets ("Scolaban" Burroughs Wellcome and Co. ) 1x100 mg/kg - Group J 3. ) Niclosamide tablets {"Devermin" Chinoin) 1x500 mg/kg - Group C 4. } Cantrodifene tablets {"Lopatol" CIBA-GEIGY) 1x200 mg/kg - Groups G and I FIELD TRIAL One of the greatest difficulties concerning anthelmintic medication of the dog is the need for restraint. Vomiting occurs frequently in stressed dogs interfering with the efficiency of the treatment. Hence, biscuit formulation was considered suitable for easy administration. Biscuits (formulations A and B) containing 1 g (5%) of bunamidine hydroxynaphthoate each were prepared with Carbowax - 4000, cartilage pulp and "Protecan " (Fig. 1), Formulation A was used in Exp. 2 (Group E). This was followed by a field trial in which 122 and 35 dogs, all kept in their usual habitat, were given medicated biscuits of A and B formulation, respectively, in order to test their palatability. Results LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS BHN given in the food was readily consumed by dogs of Group F, but biscuits were partially or totally refused by 5 of 9 dogs of Group E within 2 and a half hour of observation. Remaining biscuits were then broken, mixed with minced raw meat and fed. After treatments no untoward sequelae were noted except vomiting of 2 dogs given BHN in suspension (one each in Groups A and B), Table 2 Summary of results of treatment trials against 6-week old E. granulosus Treatment Proportion of dogs recovered after treatment Per cent reduction of worm burden in recovered dogs Treatment number per cent Per cent reduction of worm burden in recovered dogs BHN susp, 75 mg/kg 8/15 53 99, 0 BHN susp, 100 mg/kg 12/15 80 97, 1 BHN in the food 100 mg/kg 8/9 89 97, 2 BHN biscuit 100 mg/kg 8/9 89 95, 1 BHC1 tabl. 100 mg/kg 3/5 60 99, 6 NA tabl. 500 mg/kg 4/14 28 94, 3 CF tabl. 200 mg/kg 2/16 14 84, 1 Worm recovery data are given in Table 1 and the results are summarized in Table 2. It is clear from the data that against 6-week old E. granulosus a single treatment of BHN at a dose level of 100 mg/kg effected the greatest worm removal of the four compounds involved in this study. When given in the food or in biscuit, BHN removed 95 to 97 per cent of worms in 89 per cent of treated animals. Only rarely was a worm-free condition achieved.
