SZÁM GÁBOR VLADÁR The Eternal Student To the Memory of József Pongrácz (1885-1963) The editorial staff is to dedicate the 4th issue of the volume 2013 of the historical journal Acta Papensia to the theologian József Pongrácz on the 50 anniversary of his death. Gábor Vla- dár’s introductory study gives an overall survey of József Pongrácz’s life and his many-sided activity. Pongrácz took a school-leaving examination in Pápa, then he graduated from the Academy of Theology also in Pápa, and later he studied in Edinburgh, Scotland with the scholarship of the Scottish Free Church between 1906-1908. The professor of the New Testament was Marcus Dods (1834-1909) at the time, who he considered his teacher ideal. After returning back home, he became a vice teacher from 1910 at the Calvinist Theological Academy in Pápa, where he became the first teacher of the newly-founded New Testament Department from 1913. As the professor of theology, he prepared and trained generations to be pastors between 1913 and 1947. Besides teaching, he edited the religious paper called Dunántúli Protestáns Lap for decades, took part in religious and scientific public events both in Hungary and abroad. He played a cosiderable role in the development of the library of the Calvinist Collections of Pápa. [ 510 ]
