Műhely SUMMARY ISOLT KRÁNITZ „Oh, suffering...” The history of the Charitable Club of Pápa (1844-1858) Due to the effect of enlightenment and liberalism, several democratically principled students’ club came into existence during the first half of the 19th century. From among them, it was the Philadelphia Teachers’ Club founded after 1831, the Reading Society organized in 1840 and the Creative Society established in 1841 that were presented in detail by historiography. The paper introduces the history of the recently discovered Charitable Club of the college. The students’ society — founded by the students of the college on 30 November 1844-— was organized for the nursing and healing of sick members but its constitution had not been submitted for approval either by the management of the college or by state authorities in fear of being banned. (The foundation of societies had been subject to a special permission in Protestant colleges.) The 30-40 member strong society governed by its own comissioned personnel (7 strong committee, chairman, treasurer, notary) and employing a Jewish physician from town could provide for the high-quality healing of its members up until 1858. The history of the society has been supplemented by three sources at the end of the paper. 150 Acta Papensia I (2001) 3-4.
