Püspokvác város pecsétje (1743) Siegel der Stadt Püspokvác (1743) Stamp of town of Püspokvác (1743) Vác. Although the town of Vác became the centre of A the Vác episcopate, established by St. Stephen as the 10' h during the church organisations in Hungary in the 11 th century and the Lower Saxony Iburg Annual Book 5* mentions it as a civitas already in 1074, its medieval and Ottoman age archive did not survive, as it was completely destroyed during the Rákóczi freedom fight in 1 709. Naturally the documents on the medieval and Ottoman age < t history of the town - diplomas, tithe ledgers, censuses, etc. or their later copies - can be found in the units of other archives, mainly in the National Archives of Hungary, and in the Vác Episcopal Economic Archives held as a deposit in our archive, in different collection archives and in the Vác Capitulary Authentic Location Archives. The Archives of Vác has continuously been extant since 1687, but due to the previous unprofessional selections it is very incomplete. In 1712 the two landlords of Vác, the Vác episcopate and the Vác chapter first divided only the income from the town, but in 1742 they also divided the area of the town. (This phenomenon can be seen only in the case of a few towns - e.g. Oyőr, Esztergom). This is how two independent towns, with own administrations and accordingly, with two archives were formed. This separation lasted until 1859, so regarding this period the researchers may examine the material of two city archives. In accordance with the re-chatolisation intensions, the bishop relegated the Calvinist citizens from the town, who established their independent ham, called Kisvác. The settlement existed until the beginning of 1770, when they merged again with the mother town Püspökvác. The archives of Kisvác village did not survive, however its remains can be found amongst the archives of Püspökvác. The series of documents being the most significant from the town's historical point of view, the set of records of the council-board remain only from the relatively late times of both towns. Püspökvác's starts from 1741, Káptalanvác's from 1770. The documents of the council conduct of affairs are very incomplete in both towns, out of which, until 1871, itemised computer registration has been developed. In the feudal age the role of the court of first instance was administered by the town council, the town-judge.
