Library from now on. Accordingly, we have to record and give information about the most important data of Hungarian libraries. For the time being, we are elaborating the frames of this activity. Improvement and Research Work As soon as the first machine-produced Hungarian National Bibliography was published, the first phase of the automation of the library that had begun long years ago was finished. In the second phase that has recently started attempts and investigations are being made concerning the possibility of further application of the Hungarian National Bibliography's records (data on catalogue cards, forming of a standard, its application in processing formats and other types of documents, the UNIMARC and other MARC formats, the comparative analysis of the HNB format). Preparatory works for the computerized register of "authority control" has also been started. A succesful attempt resulted in the compilation of a bibliographical publication that records periodical publications using the coding of the Hungarian National Bibliography's format. Parallel with the work mentioned above we are making preparations for introducing reforms concerning rationalization of the working process and organization that became necessary because of the automation of library work. As a first step we dealt with the problem of integrated book processing and central production of catalogue cards. Research work related to the holdings of the library is closely connected with the main trend of the national research program that aims at a complex research and unfolding of historical and cultural traditions, i.e. the historical past of the Hungarian nation even more completely than it has been done so far. The elaboration of the longterm "Hungarica"-program that had been undertaken by the National Széchényi Library as a part of the above mentioned research work was continued in 1978. The library can effectively contribute to historical-literary research, above all, with the bibliographical registration of "Hungarica"-documents. On the other hand we can contribute to research work in the field of humanities by compiling catalogues and special bibliographies and publishing them, respectively. In 1978 these activities were given an impulse .so much the more as from this year on central cultural organs of the state allocated extra financial support over the budget of the library. International Relations Participation in the International Information System In the frame of the cooperation between socialist countries, our relations have developed especially in tw T o respects, i.e. in the International Scientific and Technical Information System (ISTIS) and in the cooperation between national libraries. Within the frames of the former cooperation we contributed to the elaboration of the third phase of ASPRI (The Automatized Registration System of Periodical Publications), participated in the work of standardization led by ISTIS and contributed to the preparations of the founding of INTERINFORMKULTURA, i.e. Information System of Culture and Art. In the frame of the cooperation between national libraries we participated in the activity of committees of experts (national bibliography, expansion of stock, union catalogue and inter-library loan), as well as contributed to common research themes such as "The Typological Characteristics of National Libraries in Advanced Socialistic Societies" etc. We went on maintaining our relations with libraries of socialist countries within the frames fixed by inter-state agreements and ones made directly between the partners. An agreement between our library and a Yugoslav institution has been renewed (No vi Sad, Matica Srpska Library). Within the frames of direct exchange of experts 36 members of our staff made visits or carried on research work in neighbouring socialist countries. In addition to this, 8 persons could travel abroad in the frames of inter-state agreements, 3 colleagues could do the same beyond any agreement, and 14 colleagues participated in conferences held abroad. Accordingly, 61 members of our staff were 85
